Putting a Lid on Eyelid Surgery Myths

When it comes to facial plastic surgery, rumors and misnomers can be monolithic to the point of becoming urban legends. Rhinoplasty surgery, for example, often is associated with the myth that the nose must always be broken. Or, that facelifts often leave unsightly scars. Similarly, eyelid surgery comes with its own collection of untruths.

Before you become victim to a vacuum of eyelid surgery myths, learn how one plastic surgeon dispels rumor for fact and enables patients to achieve goals to reduce sagging, wrinkling and puffiness around the eyes.

Eyelid Surgery Survey Says!

eyelid surgeryOne of the most humorous aspects of the game show Family Feud is the sometimes left field responses that occur. Eyelid surgery myths can be similar – such as someone extrapolating that, “If you have  eyelid surgery, you’ll always have a permanent expression of shock or excitement.”

Other eyelid surgery myths, however, can seem to have a basis of truth but are still false, nonetheless, such as:

  • Eyelid surgery will leave a visible scar – typically this is not true. At Chadwell Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Chadwell will discuss exactly how surgical incisions are made and how the healing process works
  • Wearing contact lenses will prohibit you from being a candidate for eyelid surgerynot true, the use of contact lenses is ONLY restricted for a period of time during the surgery recovery process – wearing contact lenses on a regular basis will not prevent the procedure from taking place

Now might be a great opportunity to reaffirm that the previously mentioned notion regarding permanent “surprise face” is indeed a myth. Eyelid surgery doesn’t result in the appearance of “Permashock.”

The Truth About Eyelid Surgery, Could you be a Candidate?

Dr. Chadwell is a seasoned plastic surgeon who focuses exclusively on facial plastic surgery. He will be able to identify candidates for eyelid surgery, by conducting a full consultation to evaluate the overall health and desired outcome of each patient.

Generally, potential patients for eyelid surgery will meet the following criteria:

  • Have loose or sagging skin around the eye area
  • Exhibit puffiness in the eyelids, including bags under the eyes
  • Have drooping in the upper and lower eyelids
  • Demonstrate wrinkles around the eyes
  • Are nonsmokers in overall good health
  • Do not have any serious eye conditions
  • Have realistic expectations

Once Dr. Chadwell confirms that a patient is a candidate for eyelid surgery, either upper or lower eyelid surgery will be performed, depending on the needs of the patient. Recovery time varies for each individual, but all patients are provided with special instructions to maximize the healing process, including the application of cold compresses for pain and swelling and prescription medications that can be used if needed.

Those who undergo eyelid surgery are pleased, and sometimes even relieved following the procedure. Those who have excessive sagging of upper eyelids have been ecstatic at having impaired vision restored, and other patients have expressed joy as a result of having a more youthful and less tired appearance.
