restore your skin
Facial skin resurfacing, more commonly referred to as chemical resurfacing, can produce radiant results by removing damaged layers of the skin. Unlike superficial peels that can address certain skin issues such as melasma, acne and uneven skin tone, deep chemical peels can significantly improve the signs of aging and damage from the sun. To maximize the benefits of a deep chemical peel, follow your facial plastic surgeon’s aftercare protocol to ensure the longevity and look of new, beautiful skin.
Is Facial Skin Resurfacing with a Deep Chemical Peel Right for You?
Although deep chemical peels can be a common and successful remedy for tired, aging and damaged facial skin, this type of facial skin resurfacing may not be right for everyone. Before taking a look at facial skin resurfacing aftercare tips, let’s identify a few factors that qualify a candidate for a deep chemical peel versus someone who will want to seek an alternative option:
Candidates for a deep chemical peel, most likely:
- Have good overall health
- Do not smoke
- Have fine lines, wrinkles or deep creases they’d like to see corrected
- Wish to improve the appearance of mild acne scarring and uneven pigmentation
- Have realistic expectations
Those who do not make a good candidate for skin resurfacing, most likely:
- Have a history of abnormal skin scarring
- Experienced a harsh acne treatment within the last year
- Currently exhibit facial warts or have had them in the past
- Have a history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Five Peel Aftercare Tips to Help Ensure a Great Recovery and Lasting Results
It’s important for recipients of facial skin resurfacing to recognize that the recovery process is not an overnight scenario. Those who are patient and strictly follow the aftercare protocols prescribed by their surgeon will vastly secure proper healing and lasting results.
Take a look at five vital deep chemical peel aftercare instructions:
- Pain Medication as Directed
- It’s normal to feel stinging and/or burning for the initial six to eight hours following a deep chemical peel. Your surgeon may recommend
- taking a mild pain reliever such as TYLENOL® as prescribed to help alleviate discomfort.
- Dense Cream Application
- While moderate swelling accompanied by itching, tightness, peeling and crusting is normal, it’s important to keep the area moist with the application of a dense cream to be used as prescribed.
- Antiviral/Antibiotic as Prescribed
- It’s important to take these medications to ward against infection.
- No Vigorous Exercise
- While continuing to heal, it’s vital to take a hiatus from heightened physical activity for at least a few weeks after the procedure.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight
- Keep your skin protected from the sun for a minimum of four to six weeks, and make sure to generously apply sunscreen once cleared to be in the sun.
