Many turn to facial injectables as a way to achieve a more youthful appearance. And while injectables like BOTOX®, Restylane®, RADIESSE® and similar products have proven successful in minimizing the signs of aging, there are still some who are skeptical. Aren’t injectables full of toxins? If I get BOTOX®, won’t I end up looking like a statue? These questions (and more), although common, are actually misconceptions. Stay tuned to learn the truth versus falsehoods surrounding facial injectables.

Fiction, Falsehoods, and Fables Surrounding Facial Injectables

Facial Injectables

It’s only natural for misconceptions to circulate when it comes to any product, treatment or service that promotes the ability to diminish the signs of aging. Not all rumors are necessarily harmful or backed with malintent. After all, we learn at a young age how the “telephone game” works. “Susie got a dog” can easily transition to “Susie got a frog,” within the matter of a few conversations.

The only thing that changes as we become older are the topics of the telephone game – “Susie got fillers in her face last week,” can easily turn into “Susie got way too many fillers in her face and looks like a statue.”

When it comes to facial injectables, what’s the real story?

Fable: BOTOX® is a Harmful Toxin

Fact: BOTOX® contains a mild dilution of what’s called “botulinum toxin.” Although the word “toxin” may evoke an unsettling connotation, it need not. Did you know that children with cerebral palsy and/or muscle spasms are administered BOTOX® to alleviate these symptoms? Furthermore, there are a number of OTC pain relievers, cough suppressants, and other common medications that have far more potential to do damage to the body.

Fable: Facial Injectables Make You Look Like a Statue

Fact: Chances are, if you’ve heard the “injectable statue” claim, or have seen someone who appears to have a “frozen” appearance, it’s because he/she has elected to look that way, or did not consult with a professional. Facial injectables don’t make anyone look like a statue, although those administering them can. This is why it’s important to receive facial injectables like BOTOX® and Dysport®, or fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® from a professional, licensed, and skilled plastic or cosmetic surgeon – preferably one who specializes exclusively in addressing the face and neck area.

Fable: All Facial Injectables Address The Same Issues

Fact: While BOTOX® and Dysport® as well as fillers both minimize and improve the signs of aging without requiring invasive surgery, the way they accomplish their mission is different. BOTOX® and Dysport®, for example, halt the movement of muscles, therefore relaxing them which in turn creates a smooth facial appearance. Fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® are facial injectables designed to replenish volume and fullness to the skin.

Eliminating the Fictitious from the Fruits of the “Injectables Labor”

While it’s wise to approach any procedure in which something is being injected into the body with caution, dispelling fiction from fact can help unearth some of the positivity and perks that can result from receiving facial injectables.

For example, BOTOX® and Dysport® can significantly improve:

  • Bunny lines surrounding the nasal bridge
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Lip lines
  • Neck bands

Fillers like Restylane® Lyft and JUVÉDERM® and RADIESSE® can treat:

  • Folds in the jowl/cheek area
  • A hollow appearance in the cheeks
  • Marionette lines and wrinkles surrounding the area of the mouth
